The Hunt
The piece was inspired by the hunting scene in the !lm The Rules of the Game. The service staff, dressed in white, is asked to perform a preliminary task for hunting by driving game out of their cover –with the use of reeds– toward the well-dressed “hunters,” who seem to come from a di#erent, otherworldly dimension. Intense vibrations, rhythmic walking pace, synchronized movement, restlessness… Doreida Xhogu’s sculpture comprises a cylindrical construction consisting of reeds covered by fabric, which is a reference to the white-dressed servants. In the film, the white apparel makes the staff discernible in the forest, representing, one might say, a protective shield against the potential of a deadly injury from the open fire, therefore relating to the preservation of life. On the contrary, in the case of the sculpture, the reeds’ white lining becomes an allegory of the shroud, an indirect reference to loss. Besides alluding to the hunting scene, the reed acquires for the artist certain human qualities as a natural material and living organism. It is the main element of the sculpture, which we see in an almost rhythmical succession, adding texture to the surface.
